The first chapter deals with functional nervous disorders, mainly produced by high-explosive shells, and he discusses, in a very interesting way, shell shock, its varied train of symptoms, its diagnosis from hysteria, and its treatment by auto-suggestion, rest, and change. This chapter is possibly the most valuable in the book. There is little which will be^ found of special value to men experienced in the diseases of India in the chapter on dysentery : it follows familiar lines, and his remarks on the saline treatment of bacillary dysenterj% so well known and appreciated I in India, are quaint, as when he remarks that saline aperients " were found of no value by many Anglo-Indian physicians."
